Our Story: Class Rings & Field Trips

I love a good love story. And that’s why I love nothing better than having a couple sit on my couch and tell me how their love story began. That simple question, “What’s your story?” brings smiles like no other as, in a split second, moments of their relationship pass by their eyes. The feeling of butterflies, the first kiss, the moment he knew she was the one. Hearing a couple tell their story tells you so much about who they are. So Ryan and I wanted to share our story too. From first crush to first day as Mr. & Mrs.

Senior Year. Over the years, the class had dwindled down to 11.  And among that group, were a quiet boy and a bubbly girl. The 11 of us were a tight knit group, taking our new job of upperclassmen and school leaders seriously. We walked the halls with class rings on our fingers and a smile for everyone we met.

If seniors are too old for field trips, they certainly aren’t too old for a day away from the classroom. And this sunny November day had been spent at Jamestown.

I walked back to the bus with my best friend, flipping through the photos I had taken that day on my little silver point and shoot camera. The excavation site, the reconstructed church and graveyard, the Pocahontas statue we had posed with. She nudged me as we walked. “You like him,” she teased.

I shook my head. “I was just trying to avoid you know who.”

I didn’t know it at the time, but she was right. I had spent the day avoiding a boy who’d been flirting with me for the past couple of weeks. And somehow those efforts found me step in step with someone else, a quiet boy in a gray hoodie.

And when he texted me later that week about one of our homework assignments, I couldn’t help but smile.

It was nothing, but at the same time, it was the start of everything.
