Pages from the Sequel: The Return from Jamaica

As anyone who's ever read a love story knows, the wedding is usually the last chapter of the book. But in a real love story, there's so much more to be told. So much happens in the happily ever after. And that’s what the sequel is for: to tell the story of two people as husband and wife as they live and grow together. So here are pages from our sequel.

THE RETURN FROM JAMAICA

We knew we were between a rock and a hard place. I stared at the lady behind the airline counter and summarized what she had told us. “So you can get us tickets on the next flight, but it might get canceled. And then we wouldn’t be able to get our checked baggage back. But all the food is through security and we can’t go through security without new tickets and checking our luggage.”

I stared at her in frustration as she nodded. My hunger really wasn’t her fault at all. I should have noticed that we’d be flying straight through lunch time and gotten more than the smoothie we had decided to split at the airport in Jamaica. And it wasn’t her fault that the airplane had only had snack foods, which I paid a hefty price tag for, even though it didn’t fill my stomach. And it wasn’t even her fault that the only place to eat on this side of security was the Starbucks. But man, I wanted to take it out on her anyway.

“I can’t think when I’m this hungry,” I told Ryan in a not-very-nice tone. So we dragged our luggage over to the Starbucks stand and discussed our options. It looked like Hurricane Sandy was going to cancel all the flights out of Charlotte that day, and we didn’t want to sit around for a few hours and find out. I either wanted to stay in a hotel overnight or rent a car and drive home. But either way, I wanted to leave the airport right away and get a real meal!

We decided to drive home, since we had planned to go back to work the next day. The lines at the car rental station were insane (and the price to rent a car one way when you’re under 25 is ridiculous!), but eventually we were loading our luggage into a very tricked out van. Before we hopped on the highway for our 4 hour drive home, we stopped to fill our stomachs at Bojangles. Cajun fries have never tasted so good!
