"Simple Pleasures"

Why Birthdays Are Cool

1. No one expects you to work (Although I helped Ryan paint our new bookshelf)

2. You don't have to cook (see #1)

3. Presents (duh)

4. Someone buys you flowers (I have the best boss ever!)

5. You get to talk to all the people you love on the same day

6. You get to pig out on desserts without guilt (usually for several days)

7. You get to do whatever you want (I chose to bake)

Treasure Hunting ~ Vintage Camera

As I explored the shop, I ran my hand along the curved ridge of a Queen Anne chair. The dining room set was styled with a beautiful collection of china.

Every corner of the store was filled with beautiful old furniture pieces. I wanted to take it all home.  Then I saw it.

It looked like a box of junk, but it called to me. I started rummaging through and drew the attention of the store owner, who told me the box contained a bunch of old cameras. I was instantly more interested in the weird little containers inside the box. He helped me open this leather case, and I fell in love.

Meet the Polaroid Electronic Eye Land Camera 900.

This camera was produced in the 1960s. Cameras have sure come a long way in the past 50 years. I can't imagine using a camera like this. That thing is HEAVY!

While it's not a usable camera (they don't even make the right film anymore), it's a super cool piece and I can't wait to put it on our new desk bookshelf.

The case has a bunch of stuff in it, including two rolls of film. I wonder if they've been used!

Finding Time to Read

As a child and a teen, I devoured books. I spent most of my spare time reading.

And then I went to college. And instead of fiction, I read textbooks and massive biographies of Mary Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette.

And one of my goals  is to start reading again, and to read all of Jane Austen's novels.

I've previously read four, and I've actually read Pride and Prejudice twice already, but I wanted to reread them along with the others.

My big problem with this goal was finding the time. Where was I supposed to find the time to read?

Then I realized that I could actually read Pride and Prejudice in two or three months just by reading during my lunch break at work. Which is perfect, considering I'm one of the few people left in America who doesn't have a smart phone, so I honestly have nothing else to do during my lunch.

So two months ago I started. Some days it works and some days I get too distracted by everything else that is going on at the store.

I'm over the halfway point now, and I'm loving it. It's been so long since I've read something for fun that I'm really enjoying these little spurts.

It's Tax Day!

I've been waiting for this day for three and a half months. I know a lot of people have seen the approach of April 17 on their calendars and groaned, but I've just been getting more excited!

Today, I get my husband back. Because I am married to a public accountant, and that makes me a tax season widow.

After today, Ryan will go back to a regular 40 hour week schedule. No more working on Saturdays! And we get 10 more hours every week to spend together. I was all excited to have a celebratory dinner tonight, but I actually have to work late. Oh well. We can celebrate tomorrow.

Jelly beans

Happy Easter weekend, everyone!

Ryan and I didn't want to wait until this weekend to give each other little baskets of Easter candy (or whatever grown up people do), so we went out weeks ago and bought ourselves a couple bunnies, some Cadbury eggs, and two bags of jelly beans.

Have you checked out the Easter candy aisles lately? There are at least a dozen different bags of jelly beans. Starburst, Jolly Rancher, the list goes on and on. It's like every candy company turns their candy into a jelly bean for Easter.

So for the past month and a half, we've been lounging on the couch every night with a bowl of jelly beans. And Ryan and I eat them very differently. In fact, Ryan eats them wrong.

There are RULES about how you eat jelly beans. You don't just stick your hand in the bowl and pop 3 or 4 into your mouth. That results in a mish-mash of weird flavors.

The best (and only) way to eat jelly beans is to eat them one at a time so you can enjoy each flavor. (Although sometimes you can eat them two at a time as long as you stick to matching pairs and don't mix flavors).

Keep the bag nearby as you eat, so you can check the back of the bag for the different flavors. Don't you want to know what flavor you're currently enjoying?

Another rule of jelly beans is that you save the best for last. Unfortunately, when Ryan and I share a bowl,  he often gobbles up my favorite flavors before I get to them. I've been burned on this account a few times, so now I bypass this rule.

These rules also apply to other flavored candy, like Skittles, but not to M&Ms (obviously), because in spite of their many colors, they all taste the same.

So enjoy your Easter candy this weekend! But please, eat your jelly beans properly.
